Sports app

You can now download the NBC Sports app on Android TV devices

The NBC Sports app is now available for download on most, if not all, Android TV devices.

Previously, the NBC Sports app was restricted to mobile devices, although a new version of the app has recently appeared on the Google Play Store. So far, this new version has remained without the possibility of installation on Android TV products, although the new listing was accompanied by what clearly appeared to be screenshots of the TV interface.

That has now changed with the app now fully available, along with the option to install on your favorite Android TV device. Right now, the list shows support for all major Android TV units, including NVIDIA SHIELD TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, as well as Android TV powered TVs.

This will be a big win for sports fans because although they can access live and on-demand NBC and NBCSN content through a live TV provider’s app on Android TV devices, the dedicated app is a totally different proposition.

The app not only provides a central location to find all NBC-related sports content, but it also offers more content than you would find through a traditional live TV provider’s app. This also goes for better access to more live TV content in general.

Perhaps more importantly, the app fills in NBC Sports Gold content as well. NBC Sports Gold is different from typical NBC content because it requires a standalone subscription. Therefore, while you can access NBC content through your live TV service on Android TV, it is not the same as accessing NBC Sports Gold content. In addition to NBC brand channels, you will also have access to Golf channel, Olympic channel, and Telemundo Deportes from the new app.

This app will now meet all your NBC sports needs without the device owners having to switch between apps. It’s a truly one-stop solution for network sports content and that’s great news for sports fans in the United States.

Not only is the one-stop-shop nature great because it provides more comprehensive access to all sports content, but also, the same app caters to different subscribers. Like if you need a subscription to a live TV service to access NBC and NBCSN, you don’t need it for NBC Sports Gold. It’s something you can buy as a stand-alone service, and even just buy passes for specific sports – like the ice skating pass that allows you to log into the 2019 World Figure Skating Championships which is currently underway in Japan.

If you don’t subscribe to the standalone NBC Sports Gold service, or one of its associated passes, and don’t have access to NBC content in general, this app is unlikely to carry much weight for you. Some content is accessible without the need for an NBC or Sports Gold subscription, but much of it is short clip-based highlights.

To download the NBC Sports app, search it in the Google Play Store app on the Android TV device or send it directly to your device from the web version of Google Play Store (link).
