Russian Olympic Committee body challenges winter sports event ban

The Russian Olympic Committee on Friday issued an urgent appeal to lift the ban on its athletes from participating in a European winter sports festival in Finland.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport said it was setting a timetable for the case ahead of the European Winter Youth Olympic Festival from March 20-25.

The ROC’s appeal challenges a March 2 decision by the executive committee of the European Olympic committees to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes because of the war in Ukraine.

In a separate Russian case before the CAS, the national football federation appealed against bans on national teams and clubs by FIFA and UEFA. The suspensions were imposed on March 1 hours after the International Olympic Committee urged sports bodies to act to isolate Russia after the military invasion.
