PSC condemns shooting at sporting event in Marawi

VIOLENCE has no place in sport.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) made this point in a strong message condemning the shooting at a Bangsamoro youth sports event in the podium of Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi on Friday.

“The shooting was sad and tragic. This is something we condemn at the PSC in the strongest terms, ”the government sports funding agency said in a statement.

Sporting events should be a gathering of athletes whose love for equality and peace is fostered through exercise and movement.

“Let us not allow people with a penchant for violence to undermine the success of sport at the local level. Let us all continue to be vigilant in our work for peace, ”he added.

PSC President William Ramirez has already spoken to their sports coordinators in Marawi to look into the matter and find ways to prevent such an incident from happening again.

The PSC has championed its Sports for Peace program across the country, including Marawi in the past.

A group of armed men chased and beat an MSU student near the grandstand where the sporting event was taking place.

An off-duty officer who was present at the event responded but was shot and injured by the suspects.

It also resulted in the injury of several students. The initial investigation showed that personal grudge was a possible reason that sparked the incident. – Joey villar
