Rochester City School District officials and University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men leaders decided last week to go back, for safety reasons.
The UPrep and all schools in the city’s school district that have athletic teams have resumed limiting two spectators per athlete in matches and games.
Almost all of the Section V schools, within and beyond Monroe County, under the direction of the New York State Department of Health, have the same policy in place for attending events. athletes last school year for fear of spreading the coronavirus. These restrictions were dropped by the state health department, then by some districts and in some schools in the spring.
The Rochester City School District and UPrep have decided to revert to the spectator policy that was in place last year.
“The decision was made because of local guidelines (from the county health department) and the rate of community transmission,” said Camaron Johnson, executive director of the city’s school district for health, physical education and athleticism.
“It was not an easy decision, I want our athletes to participate and get involved (with their family and friends). It was not an easy decision to do it, but safety comes first.”
UPrep chief executive Walter Larkin Jr. and Johnson said they hope to ease the limit on attendance during the school year, but only after COVID-19 transmission and infection rates drop. , which have recently increased due to the delta variant. .
“I understand (the disappointment) but with everything that is going on it is spreading again,” Larkins said. “We are happy to have our children back and we want to keep them (at school).”
Policies for sports fans
The Rochester City School District and UPrep plan for admitting fans to home sporting events for their teams:
- Each athlete leaves the names of two guests with their school’s athletic director or other official for an upcoming game or match, perhaps two days or up to a week before the event. Larkin said the school will send emails reminding families of the admissions policy.
- Visiting teams at UPprep games must also submit a guest list, two per athlete and coach, in advance.
- Visiting teams at City School District games and matches are also limited to two guests per participant, but no roster is required.
