Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) Secretary General Abu Metha said today that the South Asian Cross Country Championships and the 56th National Cross Country Championships will be held in Kohima on March 26.

The championship will be held under the auspices of the South Asian Athletics Association and Indian Athletics Federation in consultation with the Government of Nagaland.

“The Athletics Federation of India, in its quest to promote athletics and sports across the country, to develop athletics in the North East, has taken the decision to organize big events in the North East , to spearhead the development of the game in the North East, to develop the athletes and sports fraternity in the North East,” said Metha, who is also Associate Vice President of Indian Athletics Federation and Advisor to the Minister in leader of Nagaland, during the press conference at the Talimeren conference room of the NOA office complex here.

Today, he said, India is becoming a sporting nation. It is the aspiration of the Indian Olympic Association and the Indian Athletics Federation for India to become a sports superpower within the decade.

“This dream and aspiration is being realized year by year. The excellent performance of the Indian contingent at the recent Tokyo Olympics, which was propelled by Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal in athletes, shows the emergence of Indians in sports,” he said, adding that even now, “we have many athletes who are winning nationally and internationally.”

He said India is looking forward to excellence and record performances in the upcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games to be held this year. China will host the Asian Games and the UK will host the Commonwealth Games.

In its quest to develop the sports in the northeast, the AFI has previously granted the hosting rights of the South Asian Cross Country Championships and the 56th National Cross Country Championships to Nagaland.

“We are looking forward to this event and we are grateful to the government of Nagaland under the leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for coming forward and mandating the organization of this event,” he said, thanking the latter for supporting and sponsoring this event.

This event was to be held earlier but due to the pandemic it had to be postponed and finalized on March 26 in Kohima. The event will take place at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

“We are expecting participants from all Affiliated States of India, from all Affiliated Union Territories. We have also received confirmation of participation from all South Asian countries and the formalities are underway to obtain the visa to allow them to come and participate here,” he said.

Metha said the event may be the biggest sporting event held in Nagaland for over 50 years.

“So far, Nagaland has not hosted an international event. Moreover, this event is a recognized event by the Indian Athletics Federation, the Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Sports and Youth,” he said, adding that the ministry had already given clearance and his approval for the conduct of this event.

“We will also have officials, delegates from all these (South Asian) countries to attend this event and the Annual General Meeting of the South Asian Athletics Federation will be held in Kohima. This in itself is a landmark and we hope that various issues that are discussed for the development of the sport will benefit not only the northeast but also Nagaland,” he said.

Former world athletics medalist Anju Bobby George and former Asian champion PT Usha will also be part of the event.

They are expected to arrive before the event and interact with young athletes from Nagaland and the North East.

He said Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is also the chairman of NOA and organizer of the organizing committee of the event, had already invited a number of delegates and dignitaries and invited the Minister of Sports Union and Youth Anurag Thakur to be the guest of honour.

“Use various facilities in the NOA office complex”

Metha said various facilities have been made available in the NOA office complex.

“All these facilities are now being actively used by various sports associations in the state,” he said, adding that these facilities belong to the Nagaland Youth, Nagaland Sports Fraternity and youth across the state. .

“Every young person, every sports administrator and every member of the sports fraternity is part of this installation and we are looking for greater participation from all sections in the various activities that are coming up. We look forward to the sports fraternity association,” he said.

Furthermore, Metha said such facilities were created to empower young people and advance the sport in Nagaland.
