A. Ananthi, a beach volleyball player from Melur, has qualified for the 2022 International School Sport Federation (ISF) Gymnasiade, to be held in Normandy, France from May 13-28.

She qualified at the national level selection organized by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) held in Namakkal on March 20, where more than 1,200 athletes competed in various sports. She will represent India at ISF along with teammate KB Amirthaa and substitute player Mr. Swethaa.

Ananthi is a Class XII student at Palaniappa Memorial Senior Secondary School, Palanichettipatti, near Theni and resides in a hostel run by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. She is from Therku Theru in Melur, near Madurai.

Her trainer of six years, MF Mohamed Thoufik said: “I am very happy that she is competing on the world stage. We will train him to give the best of ourselves during the competition.

Talking about his background, Ananthi said, “My brother must have missed the opportunity to compete in the national championships because he didn’t have his passport. But this time, I did it to compete at the international level which brought him immense happiness.”

Her parents helped her pursue a career in sports, she said.

‘The event comes up against my jury consideration in May for which the Minister of Commercial Taxes and Registration, P. Moorthy, has promised assistance,’ she said.

In June this year, she will also represent the state at Khelo India Youth Games 2022 in beach volleyball.
