China: the Beijing Winter Olympics, a sporting event for peace and unity

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the Beijing Winter Olympics will advance cooperation and bring hope to mankind.

He hopes all countries will uphold the commitment of the Olympic spirit, said ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin.

Wang made the remarks in response to a question about reports of US plans to hold military training operations with its allies in areas neighboring China during the Games.

The spokesperson said the Beijing Winter Olympics are a major sporting event. He called on all countries to stand united under the Olympic motto “faster, higher, stronger – together” and to work together to advance peace and understanding.

According to Wang, sticking to the Olympic spirit is the responsibility, duty and common aspiration of the international community, he assured that China is confident that with the support of all parties and guided by the Olympic spirit, he will present a successful event to the world.

Several world leaders expressed their expectations and support for the upcoming Olympics. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres both announced they would attend the opening ceremony in Beijing.

Wang welcomed their support and reiterated his opposition to any attempt to politicize the sporting event.
