Cairns Hosts First International Sporting Event in Renovated Convention Center | Tropic now

World-class sport returns to the newly refurbished Cairns Convention Center ahead of schedule.

The Origin Australian Diamonds will host the New Zealand Silver Ferns in Cairns on October 17 in a bid to reclaim the Constellation Cup.

The match, scheduled just four days after the teams’ first Test match in Brisbane, will mark the first time the Diamonds have played a Test match in Cairns.


Both teams will then cross the gap to play the series in Auckland’s Spark Arena.

Origin Australian Diamonds coach Stacey Marinkovich is thrilled to start on 12and series in the team’s home country.


“It has been a long time since netball fans have been able to watch international netball live in Australia,” she said.

“We hope to have a huge home advantage in Brisbane and Cairns.”

The team of players will be announced at the end of August.

In their last game in March, the Silver Ferns picked up a home win to win the Cup for the first time in eight years.

All four matches have been closed to the public due to COVID-19, but crowds are expected to return in October.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen also hailed the return of world-class sport to the region.
