Global data firm YouGov has released its sports buzz rankings for India. To calculate rankings, the company assigns each event a buzz score. The buzz score is the difference between the percentage of respondents who hear positive news and the percentage who hear negative news about an event.
The Indian Premier League became the most talked about sporting event with a buzz score of 50.8, despite Covid disruptions and a change of venue for its Stage 2. IPL retained its position as the sporting event whose we speak the most in India.
With a score of 49.2, the Summer Olympics came second on the list. India gave their best performance ever and won 7 medals in the event, keeping it in a positive light.
Another cricket event, the ICC Cricket World Cup came third in the list even though India did not reach the knockout stage. The event had a buzz score of 45.9
While the Indian football league ISL managed to hold on to fifth place, the FIFA World Cup fell one spot and now sits in fourth place.
The Wimbledon Championship and Australian Open tennis tournaments were in 6th and 10th place, with buzz scores of 18.0 and 13.0 respectively.
Other events on the top 10 list for India were Pro Kabbadi League, Asian Games and World Wrestling Entertainment.
